" After reading your request for more information,I enclose a tiny
photo of Harry Starkie, who was my Grandma's fiance. Sadly, he was killed
in present day Iraq and is buried in the Amara War cemetery. His name
is also commemorated in Edinburgh Castle on the roll of honour, because
he served in the Seaforth Highlanders, 1st Battalion S/N 10506 .
My Grandma never got over losing him, and wore
a locket containing the photo I now send to you. I'm unable to take the
photo out of the locket, so I hope the photo is acceptable as a memento
of a young man who died too young and was never forgotten."

"I have pics of his Mum and Dad because our
family always kept in touch with them".
"Albert and Maretta Starkie"
"Auntie Maretta - much younger"

I came across these photos of my beautiful Grandma, Clara
Hargreaves; as you can see, in both she is wearing the locket containing
Harry's picture. She must have been about 18 - and perhaps the portrait
photo was done specially for Harry. I like to think so, and I hope he
got it. I wondered if you would include it on Harry's page; she was a
weaver too, and they lived in adjacent streets. Perhaps they worked at
the same mill.
