Burnleys Great War Centenary Sponsored by: David Thompson

"David Thompson was the youngest of 4 brothers. He worked at Bank Hall pit. As is known he was killed just after 2pm on 8th August 1916 in the battle of the Somme. He was mortally wounded by shell fire. According to the family, his brother John was with the 38th Welsh also at Mametz. Realising David was dying, word was sent to his brother who came and comforted David in his last moments. John returned to Burnley after the War and lived in the cattle market area. He never married and lived as a recluse, never talking of the War."
