Another Burnley Collier Makes the Supreme Sacrifice
A month ago, Pte. J. W. Waite (15369), whose home is at 20, Ward Street,
Burnley, wrote to his wife saying that if he was fortunate enough to come
through an impending engagement he would probably be home on leave in
a month’s time. His desire, however, was not to be filled. On Wednesday
an official intimation was received saying that he had been killed in
action on July 26th. Prior to joining the Forces, Pte. Waite worked as
a collier at Townley Pit. He enlisted in the 20th Lancashire Fusiliers
in January of last year. He was 27 years of age, and leaves a wife and
three young children. The deceased soldier has two brothers serving –
Private Leonard Waite and Private Joseph Waite. His wife also has three
brothers serving the country.
