Enlisted in the 11th East Lancashire Regiment (Accrington Pals) 19th September 1914 having previously served in the 2nd & 5th East Lancs. He was discharged as unfit 18th December 1914.

Re-enlisted 14th August 1916 into the 4th East Yorkshire Regiment and then posted to the 13th Battalion (4th Hull Pals " The Others") on the 1st of January 1917. Posted to the 1st Battalion in February 1918 on the disbanding of the 13th.
Killed in Action East of Ovillers and Vendegies - Au- Bois
