James
had been a regular soldier for almost 12 years and had war not broken
out would have completed his Army service in December 1915.
Unfortunately that was not to be the case and James found himself with
his regiment at the battle of Mons on the 23rd August 1914 and was reported
missing after the battle. British casualties were over 1600 men killed,
wounded or missing.
He was still classified as missing in 1917 when the death of his brother
Harry was reported in the Express of 21st April of that year.
James’ body was never recovered and he is commemorated on the La
Ferté-sous-Jouarre memorial in France which commemorates over 3500
British soldiers who were killed between August and October 1914 and have
no known grave.
