Pilgrimage to Gallipoli

September 2011

A group from the East Lancashire Branch of the Western Front Association took part in a pilgrimage to the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey and visited the graves and memorials to the 276 men from Burnley who died in the Dardenelles campaign of 1915. Many men were killed there serving in the Burnley Territorial's (5th Battalion East Lancashire Regiment) including 2nd Lieutenant Alfred Victor Smith VC.

Smith’s VC can be seen in Towneley Hall. Other Burnley recruited units with high casualties were the 6th Battalion of the East Lancashire Regiment and the 2nd/2nd East Lancashire Field Ambulance of the Royal Army Medical Corps.

Most of those who died, because of the chaotic and vicious nature of the fighting have no known grave, and are commemorated on the Helles Memorial. This commemorates 21,000 British soldiers including 177 Burnley men.
A list of the names of the Burnley men killed in the Dardenelles Campaign can be found on the “Burnley in the Great War” internet website which also lists the activities of the local branch of the Western Front Association.
