Their mother laid a wreath of red roses on behalf of the parish when the memorial at St. Matthew’s was unveiled on Whit Sunday 1922.

SECOND SON KILLED – DISTRESSING NEWS FOR BURNLEY PARENTS
( Burnley Express 26th June 1915)

Mr. and Mrs. James Hartley of 221 Cog Lane, Burnley have received official news that their son Private Hiram Hartley of the 6th East Lancashire Regiment who was previously reported missing was killed in the Eastern theatre of war on the 9th April. It was only on the 30th of last month that they got official notification of the death of another son Private Howarth Hartley aged 28 of the Lancashire Fusiliers (machine gun section) He was shot by a sniper in France on the 15th of May and it now transpires that his elder brother Private Hiram Hartley, who was 29 years of age worked with his brother Howarth at Bee Hole Colliery before war broke out. Hiram joined the 6th East Lancashires soon after war broke out. He went through the Dardanelles campaign and was wounded in the head, coming home on leave for a short time and then going out to the East. He was a single man. Mr. and Mrs. Hartley have a third son out in France Private Ephraim Hartley, also of the East Lancashire Regiment.
