"Harold Roberts, who was KIA Sept 22nd 1916 whilst serving with
the 6th East Lancs & is on the Tyne Cot memorial, His wife was Lucy
Ellen Roberts (nee Veevers ie one of the 5 Veevers siblings,3 of who lost
their husbands/betrothed in the 1st WW )
The Roberts family resided at 176 Howard st Burnley,
I had always understood that the Richard Roberts (the baby on this photo)
was born after the death of his father Harold, but I was obviously mistaken,)
Lucy Ellen died in Sept 1956, 19 Elmwood St Burnley,
Florence died in 1978, also 19 Elmwood St
Richard died Sept 1965 aged 49 yrs, Nairne St Burnley.
Auntie Lucy (as my brother & I always knew her by) was indeed
our favourite relation & we never realised the cross of mis-fortune
that she,& indeed thousands of others had to bear in silent testimony
to the loss of their loved ones,
She always had time for us & always gave us,along with another of
our cousins,4d a week, which was a large sum out of a pensioners pocket
at the time,
But if there is a heaven,I'm sure that she will be there."
Lucy was the sister of Edith Roper, wife of Samuel
Roper.
