Private Herbert Atkinson
6806 18th Hussars
Born 1st May 1892
Lived at 18 Mansergh Street
Prisoner of war 21st March 1918, Herville

His Brother Harold Victor 35736 Lancashire Fusiliers, killed in action.
Another brother Roy 781701 Royal Field Artillery ,also served.

I was also delighted when your site lead me to my other great uncle, Pte Herbert Atkinson (6806, of the 18th Hussars) who did return home. However I knew little about him because he died long before I was born and even my mum does not remember him (shrapnel in his body caused him to die early). Whilst my mum believed he was in the Hussars (like his brother Ernest who died in Masagan in 1912) I did not know he was in the 18th Hussars or his regiment number. So thank you for that.

He died of cancer linked to shrapnel in his body some years after the war. My mum is convinced that there may be descendents of him in the Burnley area.
